one of my favourite part of mushroom hunting has always been the colour changing. unsure of what mushroom it is - or just checking whether it’s worth to reap it from the soil or whether the worms have claimed its core already - you cut in. the flesh bruises slowly - or immediately turns into blues and purples, and blacks. quicker than you can comprehend, nearly.
and then, second favourite - you press the flesh softly against your tongue. if it bites back, you toss it. if it’s mild and sweet, you claim it. a damning kiss, yes, yet lifesaving.
